When the loud and brash Mrs Maddern moves on to Tennyson Close, Maureen feels the tone of the area is slowly sinking and takes it upon herself to monitor her new neighbours’ conduct. Obsessively scrutinising Mrs Maddern and her cat’s every movement, Maureen will stop at nothing to bring down her nemesis next door.

Maureen Davenport, a middle-class, middle-aged lady living in a small rural town

She wears neat, conservative clothes, probably purchased from Marks and Spencer or Laura Ashley, a pair of binoculars on a strap around her neck

She is a fussy, pretentious woman who is easily irritated and quick to judge.
