Yallery Brown
Screen play written by Kei Bailey
The SO Festival is an annual street theatre festival held on the Lincolnshire coast. It showcases a variety of high quality and innovative arts and cultural entertainment to people of all ages. It is brought to you by Magna Vitae Trust for Leisure and Culture and offers audiences a truly memorable experience with a range of local and international performances.
In 2020, due to the pandemic, the SO Festival evolved into the SOfa Festival – an online offering of arts and entertainment that could be enjoyed on screens from your own sofa. As part of this programme, I wrote a screenplay which was filmed and produced by Beyond Boundaries Theatre and shown as part of the SOfa Festival. It was called Yallery Brown and the Hunt for the Lincoln Imp . . .
Yallery Brown, a nature spirit from old Lincolnshire folklore, is tasked with finding the Lincoln Imp who has escaped his stone prison and hiding somewhere in the county, readying himself to cause much mayhem and mischief. Yallery sets off on an adventure around the towns, villages and countryside of Lincolnshire in search of the Imp, meeting various fantastical characters who are there to help or hinder him along the way.
In Elsea Wood near Thurlby, he meets a spiteful witch known as Nanny Rutt who tells him she has reversed the curse placed on the Lincoln Imp so he is no longer trapped in stone and free to riot and rampage around the county.
On the Fens, Yallery meets Tiddy Mun, a bog spirit who has the ability to control the waters and mists of the Fens.
In the Lincolnshire Wolds, he meets Mavis Enderby, a kindly fairy Godmother who watches over the people of the Wolds.
At Sibsey Windmill, he finds Yellow Belly the boggart, a mischievous sprite who plays annoying tricks like ripping holes in flour bags and jamming rocks in between the mill stones.
On the East Coast, Yallery meets the Donna Nook, a sea fairy who watches over the seaside.
At Tattershall Castle, he encounters a ghost known as the White Lady, a spirit who wanders battlements of the castle.
